Featuring a rarely seen and tremendously prized ivory-hued field, this refreshing, unabashedly non-traditional allover Serapi features unexpected ever-changing patterning in lieu of the traditional overscale center medallion format. A multitude of flowerheads, buds, and shapely fronds rendered in various scales wend their way skyward on undulating willowy vines. The most oversized blooms serve to anchor the field visually, with no two alike in color or shape. The dextrous change in outlining color choices and their application completes the accomplished artistic illusion of background and foreground, dispelling any accusations of two-dimensionality. The immense range of a mellow 19th-century Serapi color palette is unique and allows for an advanced shading technique where every imaginative botanical element comes to life before one’s very eyes. Framing this inarguably unconventional field pattern is a tremendously lyrically drawn classic palmette and vine design borrowed from ancient city weavers used here with great finesse. Extremely durable wool and expert construction have left this village carpet in remarkable condition for the next generation of lucky owners.
