This transcendent carpet epitomizes the archetypal “Dragon and Phoenix,” among the most cherished motifs in the deeply revered Bakshaish style. Shown with continual minor yet mesmerizing asymmetries along a central vertical axis, the composition-defining, double-pendant medallion anchors in deep indigo blue, with four intensely animated, stylized dragon motifs, coupled with ivory, deeply stylized phoenixes swirling in controlled arrangement around inner, camelhair star form. Against the beige-hued field, naively rendered blossoms float, providing an endearing earthly counterpoint to the cosmic grandeur of the medallion. In the four spandrels, yet more cryptic serpentine and wildflower motifs further echo the carpet’s theme of the harmonious interplay between heavenly and earthly forces, In the warm coral main border, classic winged cartouches are rendered in a somewhat more florid nature. The delicacy of the floral meanders that fill the secondary border is the product of this unusually time weave for a Bakshaish carpet. This folkloric masterwork has been preserved for nearly 175 years in unusually good pile condition with complete edges and ends.
