Shirvan tribal rugs have long been prized for their inventiveness and artistic spontaneity, married with a fine weave and delectable, richly dyed colors. In this dazzling representative, a pair of prismatic jewel medallions light up the center field, adorned with solar disks and Coptic cross motifs rendered with architectonic precision. This particular piece is endowed with almost endless charming talismans and totemic symbology intended by the weavers to repel the age-old specter of the “evil eye.” Fantastic geometrical flowers, cloud bands, esoteric emblems, and myriad apotropaic forms share the glowing red ground with a menagerie of mystical creatures prevailing with long-tailed birds and gazelle-like beings. The peacock-in-chief oversees the entire magical design matrix of this tribal treasure, where the weaver’s clever asymmetries fuel the lively energy and amplify the tremendous visual impact. Dark and bright ivory outlining engenders a wonderfully bold graphic effect, allowing each element to be fully expressed in astounding clarity. This 19th-century cosmic Caucasian rug is in outstanding even, medium pile condition with intact fringe ends.
