From the esteemed embroidery-based tradition of Caucasian Soumak flatweaves, this enigmatic piece exhibits a graphically stunning thematic unity and rigorously observed balance and harmony not always found in these incredible pieces. A magnificent pattern of what originated as careful observations of nature has undergone a visionary tribal transmogrification to create what looks like a highly prescient modern art masterpiece. A series of elaborate, purely geometric forms dazzle the eye and lighten the heart through their fascinating shapes while interlocking like kaleidoscopic puzzle pieces. Populating the richly dyed madder red field are a prodigious number of endearing ornaments in a wide range of scale, eliciting a sense of great depth. Combined with the adept application of abrash, the multidimensionality of this weaving increases. Luminous royal blues, ivory, forest green, mocha, and saffron-based gold are combined with balanced ivory accents and Tyrian purple - strategically employed due to its precious nature. While quite early flatwoven Soumaks are quite often found in a semi-tattered state, this nearly two-centuries-old gem remains in outstanding condition.
