Antique Bijars are Persian town rugs renowned for their fantastically unique design detailing and rich, scintillating colors. Here we see the beloved ‘harshang’ design known far and wide across the rug making world with each region giving it their own spin on this striking traditional pattern. Its lush allover field incorporates large winged palmettes and energetic rosettes, fluidly integrated amidst a plethora of secondary organic motifs that flash brightly against the dark cobalt background. A delightful sense of weightlessness and movement is created by the interplay of the varied shapes and tremendous range of scale between elements. An astounding range of sparkling jewel hues crackle with celebratory energy like a woven fireworks display. A narrow rosette and oak leaf border allows the field display to be more fully enjoyed by a bedazzled onlooker. Bijars are known as the ‘Iron Rugs of Persia’ because of their incredibly dense foundation and are almost invulnerable to any damage of note, and this piece has very good pile and only negligible effects of the passage of time.
