("New Arrivals Gallery") Although small in size, this intensely graphic Caucasian Shirvan rug is a wholly individual, utilitarian, and expansive artistic celebration. Borrowing the iconic Lesghi Star motif, a synergistic weaver living around Shirvan has made it her own. Beguilingly, these stars are presented like punch-outs in the clouded azure field color, revealing vermillion and ivory underneath the surface. Its colors are as radiant as a Tiffany glass lampshade, placed with a master’s sense of pleasing contrasts and how to create an overall buoyant presentation. I can imagine this piece lightening up one’s mood after a long day, both in the 19th century and just as easily in the 21st. Constructed of the very finest tribal wool, this charmer was likely woven on the go for their own personal or family usage and has a wonderfully carefree quality. The cheerful main border runs the gamut of rainbow hues and augments the enigmatic atmosphere of this particularly desirable 150 to 170-year-old modernist art piece in impressively good condition.
