SHIRVAN STAR RUG
3' 9" x 5' 5" (114 x 165cm) Late 19th C.
(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Created by a daring and skilled artist, this riveting tribal rug is a vivid celebration for the eyes. Borrowing only the "keyhole" central field ornament and the carnation minor borders from the local design pool, the weaver grounded her design with powerful triple 8-point star medallions that she amplified with a rare green hue at both ends. Brilliantly framing this configuration is a diagonal stripe pattern in the main border, an impressively effective choice. The impact is exciting, similar to that of high-mountain Kazak rugs, with bold graphics and color contrasts. All of its motifs are drawn with incredible precision, combined with creative fluidity. The tertiary ornaments, including precision square rosettes and whimsical pinwheel blossoms, tellingly expand the emotional impact on the viewer. Because of its remarkable condition, the unusually fine knotting, deeply lustrous wool, and tremendously luminous natural dyed colors, this standout tribal rug can be enjoyed on the floor or as a dramatic wall hanging.
