SERAPI, Northwest Persian
9' 2" x 12' 3" Late 19th Century Price: $36,000
(Connoisseur-Caliber)
("New Arrivals Gallery") This room-size Serapi from the fabled carpet-making realm of Northwest Persia excels through its expressive pattern language. Floating on a seldom found ivory ground, a mesmerizing collection of abstracted blossoms fills the field with bold elemental renderings that demonstrate an intuitive aesthetic sensitivity. These stylizations are instantly recognizable as being based on the classic Harshang pattern and reflects the joyful, uncomplicated lifestyle of 19th-century Serapi weavers. Distinctive organic dye brews from essentially extinct recipes created a wonderfully serene palette of sophisticated harmonious hues. Happily, this artistically inspired carpet is in extraordinarily good condition at over 125 years of age.
