MOHTASHAM KASHAN
4' 5" x 6' 10" (135 x 208cm) 3rd Qtr., 19th C.
(High-Collectible) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Offering tremendous compositional genius and a magnificently etched clarity to its motifs, this is a masterpiece from the universally celebrated and highly coveted Mohtasham Kashan classical weaving group. Beginning with a luminous sea-green lotus at its center, a double-layered medallion rests on a deep scarlet reserve among wonderfully stylized, almost “stained glass”- looking blossoms. Each botanical element is vivified by the masterful combinations of colors that accentuate every faceted flower. Buttercream spandrels mirror the centerpiece and offer exquisite contrast when juxtaposed with the rich jewel hues of the field. Dextrously drawn, glowing filigree vinery encircles rosettes in the midnight indigo border, harmoniously echoing the outer medallion and pendants in a compositional coda to this tremendously successful symphony of hue and design. This extraordinarily finely knotted treasure remains in heavier pile condition due to being in the possession of serious collectors, who alternately displayed it on the wall and kept it in storage.
