("New Arrivals Gallery") This jubilant expression of artistic delight from the Shirvan weaving group of the lowland Caucasus region dazzles the viewer with its dynamic combination of graphics and color. A trio of flashy architectural medallions commands the field, while a constellation of abstract flowerheads is present in the interstitial spaces. Their ingenious variations of scale create a sense of advancing and receding that bestows a wonderful dimensionality to this excellent, crisply drawn graphic presentation. Each dynamic geometric motif achieves extraordinary clarity and energy emboldened by rich colors against an indigo ground. Deep royal blue, brilliant vermilion, saffron-based glowing golds, and soft jade greens are combined in a welcome banquet for the eye. These luminescent hues were brewed with organic dyestuffs gathered locally or procured through regional trade routes. Its superb border pattern is derived from S-shapes representing cloudbands that envelop the Celestial Dragon. This tribal stunner’s superb condition belies its age, its surface shimmering with a gentle patina.
