BAKSHAISH, Northwest Persian
8' 8" x 10' 6"
264 x 320cm
3rd Quarter, 19th Century
(High-Collectible) This is a premier Bakshaish carpet from the Persian Second Golden Age of Weaving that fully illustrates the inspired creativity and improvisation still alive in the third quarter of the 19th century. The clever reinvention of a classic ‘harshang’ pattern, which plays out on a luxe Bakshaish Blue background, is rife with extemporaneous decisions that sprung from an encouraged artistic license. An eager explosion of transmogrified exotic flower forms reflects a wide range of elaborate shapes and clever use of scale to vivify the pattern into something the viewer can actively participate in. The juxtaposition of graduated hues further annunciates every motif, with the abrash striations in the background like sunrays dancing across the surface. The entire composition exudes an archaic feel and enticing folkloric quality capable of transforming an interior environment from more traditional to ultra-modern. This versatile-sized carpet offers a splendid, glowing patina at 175 years old, amplifying the entrancing sense of tremendous visual depth for years of happy discovery within.
