(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") A virtually never found Caucasian long rug like this glorious “Snowflake” Shirvan catapults the viewer into relatively unknown territory, as many tribal pieces do from the immense body of interconnected weaving traditions. What is certain is that the weaver was a fearless adventurer. Instead of the expected snowflake-shaped blossoms in regimented diagonal rows of highly orchestrated colors, this weaver draws them as overscale, with a fascinating degree of spontaneity in hue and placement, even slightly overlapping. Their positions still allow for a glittering array of floating florets joined near the perimeter by several endearing surprise guests. The color palette also reflects a study of different dye recipes for yellow and associated pale tonalities joined by intense vermillion and deep Oxford navy. An orderly glowing Kufic border of enclosed cloudband rosettes accentuates the improvisations of the field. As a tremendously collectible piece with ideal proportions and a versatile width, it would make for an illuminating path to follow.
