Twitter Facebook Pinterest(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") Always beguiling, this beautifully woven example of the Gubpa sub-style reflects the work of a mature weaver who was comfortable injecting generous, carefree quality into this traditional pattern that is particularly fetching. This Shirvan masterwork exhibits a mesmerizing pattern language that irreverently shows the inverse of what is typically shown in Gubpa pieces, with the vermilion palmette “finial” placed between the faceted medallions. Individualistically drawn geometric devices whimsically populate the softly abrashed Prussian blue ground. Some are age-old, and some are spontaneous creations by the weaver, gamboling among softened snowflake emblems, knotted rosettes, talismans, and octagonal insignias. Its vigorous palette of teal, burnished electrum, jade green, citrine, regal blue, and sandstone hues is sensitively balanced. The bright ivory main border features a wonderfully vibrant “crab pattern” of spiky pom pom flowerheads and exacting claw-like appendages. It remains in splendid condition with even, patinated medium pile.
