Twitter Facebook Pinterest(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") Woven in the small town of Ladik on the plains of south-central Anatolia, near Konya, the heart of the Sufi community, this early Turkish prayer rug demonstrates why experienced collectors revere fine pieces in this style. A single adornment hovers within the steeply pitched arch or ‘mihrab’ found at the top of the vermilion flame-red reserve. At the same time, tiny abstract springtime buds line the vertical edges, and welcoming carnations pop up below. Above the archway is adorned by flowering vinery spreading upward toward a cartouche filled with abstract crenellated imagery. Turkish color palettes, before the advent of factory-produced chemical dyes, spark an intense curiosity from the mind in the way that they are “avant-garde," unexpected, and extremely visually rewarding in their harmony. The moss greens in the border are rarely found. The artistry of this impactful, enigmatic piece is inexplicably mesmerizing! Collectors understand that reproductions from the 20th century and beyond simply cannot capture the enchantment and traditional artistic essence found in authentic Ladiks from this period and earlier. It remains in outstanding condition at two centuries of age.
