Twitter Facebook Pinterest(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") This is a brilliantly executed, slightly avant-garde Caucasian Surahani Baku carpet with extraordinary detail and tremendous variety in its tribal motifs. Spacious compartments feature esoteric scenes of horses, hieroglyphic birds, emblems, and reticulated patterns to invest in this engaging work with rhythmic energy. Dazzling masses of boteh (Seeds of Life) inhabit the field’s vertical edges. The shifting royal to cobalt blue hues associated with this wealthy port city provide the primary background color. A sumptuous ruby red provides complementary tones as the expert dyers experimented with a wide range of gradients. The main border houses crystalline Art-Deco-style rosettes and ivory almond flowers. Three-quarters of the way up, the rosettes become modern cubist versions, among other charming improvisations. This outside-the-box Baku, virtually never seen in such large dimensions, represents the artistic vision of master weavers in its inspired command of unusual color and spontaneous, creatively fecund imagery. Its exceptionally fine knotting indicates that its creators were masters at their craft as well as highly sensitive artists.
