Twitter Facebook Pinterest(High-Collectible) ("The California Collection") Some antique rugs have an immediate, profoundly entrancing impact. One's eyes become transfixed by them as they induce a kind of frisson in the viewer. Vertically balanced along a slender field, lyrical latch-hook mandalas, and whirling geometric rosettes emanate from a transmogrified 8-point star medallion at its center. They are surrounded by the tertiary motifs of Diamonds of Strength, checkerboards, cloudbands, and Stars of Wisdom. Between pairs of rosettes at the top and bottom stand two enigmatic figures inhabiting this playground of polygons. The stunning clarity results from a confident, experienced weaving hand, a maestra of color juxtaposition, yielding a mesmerizingly controlled dynamism. As for the color palette, an exceptionally gifted individual marshaled a feat of dyestuff alchemy. Delft blues, champagne, a range of vermilions, sea green, rose quartz, sapphire, and accents of mink brown. The exquisite ‘Kufic' border pattern is a chain of bracketed Far East-inspired stylized flowerheads, compressed vertically while expanded horizontally. Its gently patinated surface offers enhanced luster to already superb wool.
