From a long-held St. Louis private collection comes this unfathomably finely knotted smaller Caucasian rug with an extraordinary sense of refinement. This Baku, woven along the shores of the Caspian Sea, mesmerizes the viewer through the continually reinvented concentric diamonds and blossoming trees within the stepped double pendant medallions that are set off from a ripe watermelon-toned field. Please look closely to the zig-zag latticework that intersects the medallions and its dazzling series of five borders, including the “crab” main border borrowed from Karabagh rugs. Like so many of the 19th century rugs we have acquired from long-held collections, it is in superb collection.
