(Connoisseur-Caliber)
Long prized by connoisseurs, Kazaks such as this superb example from the vicinity of Lake Sewan, high in the Caucasus Mountains, demonstrates the tradition’s robust aesthetic replete with numerous age-old symbols. Beautiful as well as powerful, its mellowed lapis blue cruciform shield medallion, with embellished “angel wings,” imbues heraldic splendor. Flanked by Zorastrian “S” forms, a crimson decagon rests a golden hourglass within an 8-pointed ‘Star of Wisdom’ beckoning us to remember the passage of time. Charmingly stylized polychrome barber-pole tree forms sprout and thrive within the richly hued carnelian red ground, orchestrating the orderly array of roundels. An elemental, eons-old “ashik” main border pattern, based in evocative burnished gold, completes this magnificent tribal rug, offering rare small room-size dimensions and is in wonderful condition as well!
