Late 19th Century
(Connoisseur-Caliber)
In the latter part of the 19th century, the Ziegler company from Germany invested in building many looms in the newly minted garrison town of Arak, a stone’s throw the great Ferahan weaving area. They wisely took inspiration from the wealth of local village weaving traditions and the re-invented Court designs from the Ferahan region, creating a new style, the Zeigler Sultanabad. In this beautiful, finely woven room-size example, rhythmically paired quatrefoil medallions float amidst illuminated flowerheads, palmettes, and blooming vinery. This style is beloved for its exquisite color-combining exemplified here by deep teal to seafoam green and delicate celadon hues that dance upon the glowing sunset Carbuncle red reserve. A gently textured abrash, superb wool quality and great pile condition invest this sophisticated multi-medallion tour-de-force with reason for enduring esteem.
