In this quite early rendition of the famed Bidjov Shirvan sub-style, sunburst structures drawn with a freehand quality morph into curling abstractions of the heavenly dragon. This significant motif was adapted from Far Eastern lore by traders along the Silk Routes. On a glimmering ground of sapphire blue, the artful, experienced weaver eschewed the rigidity often found in lesser examples. No single element is symmetrically placed or drawn with dull exactitude. A panoply of supportive motifs such as Endless Knots, solar discs, tiny florets, enigmatic emblems, and a lone canine run the gamut of scale, adding immense visual interest. When paired with splendidly exotic hues, the composition becomes a connoisseur's dream. A highly unusual polygon border hints at a pattern seen more often in Gendje rugs but was compressed and truncated to fit the weaver's vision. Note the improvised dashed horizontal bars that appear only once at the bottom.
