Exuding a dignified majesty and unusually fine knotting that usually eludes village weavings, this absolutely singular Serapi is a premier example of infinite innovation demonstrated by the historic weavers of northwest Persia. The spacious soft strawberry red ground derived from rose madder is adorned with a uniquely rendered field design that utilizes a distinctive nexus of electrum encased indigo vinery reminiscent of Celtic style knot work. This virtuoso composition outlines the impression of a monumental quatrefoil "medallion" and corner spandrels where truncated flame palmettes hint at an eternal pattern. Three sand-based flowerheads rest at the center with two "winged" pendants at each end of the field in shades of the sea. The classical Shah Abbas border design, featuring broad flower heads and feathery leaves, is flowingly portrayed, the organic contours heightened by glimmering abrash striation in the blues. It remains in extremely good floor condition.
