A sparkling jewel of 19th century tribal weaving, this spirited Caucasian rug from the Lesghi tribe possesses a great harmony of design and an entrancing patina of age. Three pixelated starburst medallions share the cerulean blue field with a scattering of archaic stencil blossoms, Stars of Wisdom, Wheels of Life, magical amulets, and talismans meant to imbue the rug with protective power. Adorable rows of tiny tulips line the vertical edges of the field, passing the occasional totemic bird form. Impromptu motifs abound with a nod toward casual symmetry, making this piece a one-in-the-world creation. Flaunting the freedom of artistic spontaneity even further, faceted vermilion poppies become flashy pie-cut roundels, then switch again to the original form in the outer minor band. This visually compelling rug would be a prime option for a connoisseur’s collection, as fascinating wall art or placed in a lighter traffic area.
