(Connoisseur-Caliber) ("New Arrivals Gallery") Antique Qashqais are the most revered of all antique Southwest Persian tribal rugs for their extraordinary craftsmanship and complex ancestral patterns. A cornucopia of nimbly woven motifs surrounds a quartet of graceful, linked medallions embellished by the unique tribal emblem that is instantly recognizable. This enigmatic' tamga' has been theorized to depict the wrought iron stove the Qashqai nomads used to hold a cooking pot over a fire, imbuing their rugs with a portable sense of "home and hearth." The extraordinary floral and faunal extravaganza is a fecund expression of the wonders of nature juxtaposed with important cultural symbology such as giant boteh 'Seeds of Life' incubating burgeoning trees. Interspersed between myriad floating flowerheads are birds in flight, flamingoes, and dromedary camels — all fantastical creatures and entertaining scenes such as canines hitching a ride on polygon fan-tailed birds. It is the first time we have seen Kufic script written across a peacock's tail feathers! A suite of borders energizes this mesmerizing field design, inlaid in flickering, 19th-century color.
