This extremely original Caucasian weaving is instantly set apart by the intricate puzzle piece pattern that covers the field. Prayer rugs originating in Kuba are seldom found relative to their Shirvan cousins. The distinctive niche is almost free-floating and stamped with fancifully stylized carnation blossoms. Rich gem-tones sparkle across the surface with blue topaz, deep sapphire, and emerald green engaging with garnet and burnished gold. This rug's ivory main band features an attractive "leaf and chalice" pattern with almost Edwardian flourishes. Notice how the vertical stripes have been intentionally compressed. At the top, the outer minor borders are doubled for no reason other than the weaver wished to do so. The overall design and color palette is reminiscent of Turkoman nomadic works from Central Asia and may hint at the origins of its gifted maker. Extremely good, even, medium pile glistens to vivify every design nuance.
