(High-Collectible)
("The California Collection") We have said it before, and we will say it again: the restless weavers of Bakshaish village have continually found pathways to keep their rug and carpet designs spectacular and fresh. The field consists of concentric stepped diamonds nesting with each other in glorious textured shades of sunset sandstone, clouded azure, amber, and mid-tone lazuline. An impressive assemblage of floating icons populates each zone with cubist blossoms, ancient ‘ashik’ emblems, boteh seeds, butterflies, and a curious array of quizzically endearing shapes. All have been drawn with slight irregularities that imbue each motif with a gentle animation. There is a marked sense of compression and expansion in the totally original accordion-style border pattern, the scale of which creates a winning combination of visual tension and resolution. Like the lion's share of the Collection, this is a mesmerizing one-in-the-world artwork for the floor in fabulous condition at a very substantial age.
