("New Arrivals Gallery") The beloved styles from the Persian Sarouk region that emerged in the very early years of the 20th century are known for their glistening surface that is amazingly soft to the touch. And this piece signed by the elite Gazan workshop, is a true standout. Floating, garland-adorned amphora burst with bouquets above and below a small radial flower medallion. Well-balanced floral sprays impart a majestic symmetry, while subtle variance in size, shape, and position yields a beguiling asymmetry that operates on a subliminal level, creating a sense of movement and enhanced visual interest. Kufic script echoing the carpet's maker is captured in fiery cartouches and freely drifting in the phosphorescent cobalt field. Its glowing, richly detailed composition and magnificent saturated hues reveal great artistic depth. Shimmering copper, burnt sienna, electrum, and smatterings of rich forest green are among the surprising array of colors to be found through careful observation. With heavy pile throughout at over a century of age, the surface of this irresistible small room-size carpet is extremely luxurious, while shimmering with a glow only possible through the use of lanolin-rich, lamb’s wool.
