In a cascading fantasia of color and shape, abstract poly-chromatic lotus blossoms appear to have been engraved by a master’s hand. Among these giant blossoms are spontaneous ornaments that make this piece sing. Jewel shapes bearing a reverse ’S’ representing cloudbands, fantastical gazelles, elemental ‘Trees of Life,’ and numerous tiny inclusions are sprinkled throughout. A prominent weavers’ comb stands at the entrance to the arch, where a figural shape with a conical hat also resides. The amusing design work continues above the mihrab, where the artist could not resist including two smaller-scale antlered creatures standing above cubist flowerheads. Further surprises embellish the band nearest the perimeter of the field. Extremely finely knotted with radiant natural dyes and concise rendering, this masterwork presents both precision and improvisation, resulting in a brilliant artistic achievement.
