In a cascading fantasia of color and shape, abstract poly-chromatic lotus blossoms appear to have been engraved by a master’s hand. Among these giant blossoms are spontaneous ornaments that make this piece sing. Jewel shapes bearing a reverse ’S’ representing cloudbands, fantastical gazelles, elemental ‘Trees of Life,’ and numerous tiny inclusions are sprinkled throughout. A prominent weavers’ comb stands at the entrance to the arch, where a figural shape with a conical hat also resides. The amusing design work continues above the mihrab, where the artist could not resist including two smaller-scale antlered creatures standing above cubist flowerheads.
